Start: Caldonazzo, Trentino, Italy

This circuit starts at the village of Caldonazzo which sits at the south end of the picturesque Lago di Caldonazzo. Initially you follow bike paths through apple orchards to the village of Levico Term. The ride then heads north with the immediate surrounds varying from pleasant to slightly industrial. Once reaching Borgo Valsugana, the ascent to Passo Manghen (2047m) begins. This is a tough 23km climb, with an average gradient of 7.1%. The initial kilometres follow the contour of the mountain and as you climb, the valley seems to close in behind you. Small road signs give you an indication of the number kilometres ridden, number of kilometres to go and the gradient to be suffered for the next kilometre. The road eventually opens out into more of an alpine meadow and the steep part of the climb begins. The road at this point is extremely narrow with plenty of cows occupying the space. The descent is initially steep with plenty of hairpins through tall shady pine forest. The descent flattens with a wide road until the village of Molina at which point you head south. The road is relatively flat though stays high of the valley floor and sweeps around the mountain, affording wonderful views to the opposite side of the villages and their vineyards. The final descent takes you down to Pergine Valsugana before reaching San Cristoforo where you join onto the bike path and follow the west side of the Lago di Caldonazzo back to the departure point. Oh, and don’t forget to pack your bathers – a swim in the lake is a must-do.
