Start: San Roque de Riomiera, Cantabria, Spain
This is a fantastic, albeit tough, undulating ride. On leaving the small village of San Roque de Riomiera, you are in the wonderful countryside of the Pasiegos Valleys. The climb to the first and highest col of the day, the Portillo de Lunada, starts from the moment you are in the saddle. It is a reasonable climb with only a few punchy sections. The view as you climb is spectacular and there are plenty of opportunities to look back over the valley you have climbed, as the road weaves around the mountains. Once at the high point, you descend past a ski station into a very lunar landscape. The ride takes a clockwise turn as it heads up to the Puerto de Las Estacas de Trueba (1153m), after which you have a fantastic descent down to the small village of Vega de Pas. Here there are a couple of small cafes that have the wonderful little Sobao Pasiego cake that is truly required for any cyclist. Leaving Vega de Pas, the countryside becomes more farm like and takes you up to the Puerto de La Braguia (704m). From here you descend towards a more major town but hit only the outskirts as you take a turn back towards San Roque de Riomiera – but first you climb up and over the Alto del Mojon (822m)!
