StartBormio, Sondrio, Italy

Leaving Bormio, head south and down the valley towards Mazzo di Valtellina to start the ascent of Passo del Mortirolo. The first few kilometres of the ascent are steep, as are the final kilometres, but the middle section is mind blowing, hitting a maximum gradient of 18%. The descent from the Mortirolo is not as steep and takes you through farming land and small villages. There is an opportunity to buy food and drinks at Vezza d'Oglio or Ponte di Legno prior to starting the ascent to Passo di Gavia. Hopefully your legs are still feeling strong so you can enjoy the classic (south approach) to Passo di Gavia. In spring, it is not unusual to have large walls of snow flanking the road. After reaching the col there is a plateau around the alpine lake before starting the descent down to Bormio. The descent is somewhat steep and at the time of riding, there were some serious cracks in the tarmac. In our experience, weekday rides appeared to have less motorbike action than the weekends.
