Start:  Semonzetto, Veneto, Italy

This loop takes you from the small village of Semonzetto to the summit of Monte Grappa. Whilst there are numerous routes to the summit, the loop presented today is truly a fantastic climb and descent. As you head out of Semonzetto, through the small village, the base of the climb is quickly reached and a sign stating ’28 tornantes’. It is funny that the Italian rides rarely state kilometres or gradient but rather the number of switchbacks. Anyway, 28 is a huge number of switchbacks. Though, this number is not a surprise given that the climb is 19.5km with over 1500m of altitude gain. The average gradient is 7.9%, so whilst the height of the mountain is not huge relative to other climbs, it is a tough ride.
The initial section is characterised by 14 tornantes, one after the other with forest protecting you from the sun. The switchbacks themselves flatten out and give some respite from the steeper straight sections of road. The next 7 tornantes are separated by numerous S-bends. In some ways, you feel that you have been cheated – surely some of these bends deserve a tornante rating? This section of the ride is through forest and farmland. After tornante 22, the ride opens out into an open bowl giving you a wonderful view of the surrounding area. The ride now weaves its way over the countryside and the summit with the large war memorial comes into view. The ride does not get any easier and as you get into the last kilometre, the higher peaks of the dolomites in the north can be seen. There is the opportunity to stop for food or drink at the top before you descend down. The downward route takes a different road down. This route has less tornantes, is less steep and sections of the road have been resurfaced. In all, a very fun descent! We did this ride on the weekend and our route up had little to moderate traffic though there was a little more traffic on the descent. Perhaps it would be better to do this ride on a weekday.
