Start: Gruyere, Fribourg, Switzerland

This ride had us mesmerised from the start. Why? It was enchanting. Yes, strange word to use to describe a bike ride, but truly it was. We started below the Gruyere Castle, which in itself, is a pretty cool place to start a ride. The ride passes along quiet roads of the Gruyere valley through farmland. The grass was green and lush, the cows were adorable and the cowbells rang loudly. There are some quaint villages, all with a full floral display and the historic village of Gstaad which you may stop at. After leaving Gstaad the road is more major and climbs up to the Saanenmöser Pass (1279m) followed by a long and fast descent before starting the climb to Jaunpass (1509m), the highest climb for the day. This part of the ride was characteristic of a col climb with switchbacks (and cows, and bells!) all the way to the top. There were mountain views that extended the length of the valley with glaciers visible to the south-east. After reaching Jaunpass, the view was lost as you headed down through forest to the village of Jaun and then into open farmland and onto the quaint village of Charmey before returning to the Gruyere Castle. This ride is a must-do if you want to see what Switzerland has on offer for cyclists
