Start: Cuorgne, Piedmont, Italy

The starting point for this ride is Cuorgne making it a whopping 56km ascent. An alternate starting point would be Locana. From Cuorgne to Locana the ride is more of a false flat than an ascent and this initial part of the ride is on a moderately busy, rough and somewhat unpleasant road. From Locana the traffic is less, the road narrower and the scenery more pleasing. This would reduce the ride to ~80km in total. From Locana a number of small villages and farmland is passed until you reach Noasca after which you enter a steep 3km tunnel. Fortunately on the day we rode (Monday), the tunnel was not particularly busy though it has the potential to be quite busy. Both front and rear lights are strongly recommended. Once through the tunnel it is almost like you enter another world - there is forest and the mountains are huge! The holiday village of Ceresole Reale and its grand lake is passed and the gradient lessens as you pass through the valley full of holiday makers. The final 15 kilometre ascent is tough. Initially, the road hairpins up with an average gradient of 9.5% and the way forward is visually dominated by a wall of mountain peaks. The picturesque surrounds feature wildflowers, waterfalls and rocky outcrops. Between Lago Serru and Lago Angel your legs get a brief opportunity to recharge before the final set of hairpins. Bravo! The view from the top is worth every bit of the effort applied. What goes up must come down and after 56km of ascent there is now a 56km descent. In summary, absolutely magnificent ride.
