Start: Arenas de Cabrales, Asturias, Spain
One of the things that I love about cycling new routes is discovering a climb that is out of this world. The climb from Arenas de Cabrales to Col de la Caballar fits that description perfectly. The first 5 kilometers are quite pleasant – decent road, pleasant country side, picturesque river, then as you turn over the Puente Poncebos, the ride lifts itself, literally. The ride hits some +10 percent gradients as you weave in and around some fantastic rocky limestone. The road follows the river Duje and swerves in and out, with each bend revealing an amazing vista. Just before you reach the small village of Sotres, the road kicks up to 15 percent. The road reaches an intersection with no obvious way to continue, but just keep moving forward, passing the cafes on your right. You will know you are heading the correct way when you hit another 15 percent section. AS the road zigs and zags beyond the town, you gain height quickly and are rewarded with fantastic views. Continue past the Collado de la Caballar (1238m) to the Collado Barreda (1317m). The return follows the same route up back to Arena de Cabrales. In this ride we have tagged on a small loop which takes you down the valley and then back through some picturesque farm land.
