Start: St-Jean-de-Maurienne, Hautes-Alpes, France

The ride sets off from the tourist office in St-Jean-de-Maurienne towards La Chambre. The first couple of kilometres are somewhat industrial but once past Hermillon, the scenery improves. This start point though gives your legs a few kilometres to warm up as you ride along the valley floor. After La Chambre, the first kilometre of the climb is not so bad, as it is only 6%, but after this, the gradient increases. The road zig-zags its way up the mountain and around 11km to go, there is a nice little zig that hits approximately 12%. The gradient is constantly changing so it is quite difficult to find any real rhythm to your pedal stroke. If you look back over the Maurienne valley, you can see St-Etienne-de-Cuines and the mountains traversed to reach Col du Glandon. Once through the village of Saint-Francois-Longchamp 1650 a beautiful alpine meadow opens out in front of you with mountain peaks on either side. On reaching the col and looking north-east, you may be fortunate to see the peak of Mont Blanc. As an out and back ride, the descent follows the same route on return to St-Jean-de-Maurienne.
