From the east the climb has an average gradient of 4.1% though as the road starts to climb from Argelès-Gazost, the gradient is 8.5%. Therefore, you may wish to start with a ride down the valley to warm up your legs! The initial ascent is through small villages and alpine farming land. After reaching Col du Soulor the approach to Col d'Aubisque snakes around the flank of the mountain giving fantastic views north over the valley and mountains. This view is incredible. There is an opportunity to break for a refreshment at the top of the climb. Your return will be the same way that you ascended. Which gives you a second opportunity to soak in the amazing views between Col du Soulor and Col d'Aubisque.
