Start: Pola de Somiedo, Asturias, Spain
If you are in the region, this is a cycling must. Not the longest climb, not the hardest climb but the scenery is absolutely breathtaking. The ride starts in the small village of Pola de Somiedo, in the heart of the Somiedo Natural Park. As you leave Pola de Somiedo, you descend through limestone cliffs with the river on your right. After approximately 3 kilometers, you take a right turn where a sign to the Alto de La Farrapona greets you. From here you have an 18 kilometre upward journey. Initially the road weaves through rock with vertical rock walls surrounding you. As you climb, beautiful and lush meadows expose themselves. The last 7 kilometers of the climb vary between gradients of 8 and 9 percent though you are riding above the valley and feel on top of the world.
Unfortunately, the road turns to gravel at the crest of the Alto de la Farrapona therefore, the only way back is the way you came. Though, its not really that bad as the descent is just as spectacular as the climb!
